Visiting the Safety & Health Expo 2014 at the ExCel; we could not help but be taken back at the scale of the operation, running alongside 5 other exhibitions including IFSEC and FIREX and, of course, the annual IOSH Conference. The crowds were huge and there was a feeling of heightened anticipation as the show opened on the first day at its new venue.

Many exhibitors within the PPE & Workwear sector had some really exciting new products on display, none more so than JSP who won the BSIF Product Innovation Award for their Press-to-Check self-fitting respirator.

Speaking to people around the exhibition, it became clear that there was a real sense of optimism for the next 12 to 18 months with many companies gearing up for growth, not only by launching new and innovative products but, just as importantly, hiring the right people to help deliver their goals.

The take away message is that despite this renewed optimism (and perhaps BECAUSE of it) the industry is in the midst of a real ‘War for Talent’, as companies try to position themselves as the employer of choice in a pool of dwindling talent. As the market improves and companies look to strengthen their teams, this pool will dwindle even further. Talent Matters.
